“La Vie en Rose” literally translates as “Life in Pink”. Metaphorically, it translates as “looking at life through rose-colored glasses” or it infers an optimistic outlook one has on life. The song “La Vie En Rose” was sung by the legendary French singer Edith Piaf (1915-1963). Throughout Piaf’s short life was much sadness and tragedy, yet the beauty of love was a central theme in much of her music. Her life was later immortalized in the 2007 film of the same name starring actress Marion Cotillard.
Ancient and modern symbolism for the rose representing beauty and love, are often given as gifts on Valentine’s Day and throughout the year, to symbolize ones’ affection for another.
A mind-body-spirit perspective regarding the rose is to remember to “stop and smell the roses” as we work our way up the corporate ladder. Oftentimes we are so transfixed on the destination, or so busy with the minutiae of daily life, that we are not fully present in the present. We forget that it’s the process and journey that molds us into the people we become. Certainly, the destination is worthwhile, but as soon as we achieve something, aren’t we often left wanting more? There are always new literal and figurative mountains to climb, so isn’t it important to enjoy where we are at in the here and now?
“Cultivating your inner rose” is to allow the beauty of the rose to shine from within you. Yes, we have heard the cliché that “beauty is only skin deep,” although ancients describe true beauty as “radiating from within.” It’s a presence, a light, and a way of being in the world that makes one irresistible, no matter their age, gender, or ethnicity.
To cultivate your inner rose, take a few minutes each day to stop, close your eyes, and breathe deeply in inner gratitude, peace, and love. Feel this positive energy, while placing one hand on your heart and the other hand on your solar plexus. Just sit or lay quietly someplace safe for a few minutes, breathing in slowly and deeply through your nose, and out through your mouth.
That’s it! All it takes is a few minutes. If you do this in the morning, this wonderful energy will set a positive tone for the rest of your day. Do this simple exercise for a month straight and observe the positive ripples in your life!
Even if halfway through the day something happens that causes you to feel negative or “off center” (traffic congestion, kid’s screaming, boss yelling), you can always close the door to your car, office, or bathroom cubicle if need be.
Just stop, close your eyes, and breathe deeply in inner gratitude, peace, and love for a few more minutes, someplace safe. Remember, even your overbearing boss or your irritating co-worker has something to teach you.
Once you have observed the positive ripples in your life, and you are ready to “cultivate your inner rose into an inner rose garden,” you could practice mindfully eating your lunch in the park, you could take yoga or Tai Chi classes, learn to meditate, read inspirational books, eat healthier foods, and/or volunteer to help those less fortunate.
Then there is sharing the beauty of the rose with your family, friends, and co-workers. That’s what I am doing now. I’m sharing this beauty with all of you! Sometimes just sitting on a mountain top gives me the greatest joy. You should try it sometime.
Vive la vie en rose!
True lasting happiness is not in having, but of BEING.
It’s a shift in consciousness and perception which happens over time, from spiritual practice and mindful living.
Things, though a fun and often necessary part of life, lose their firm hold they once had as the ultimate goal, “the-end-all-and-be-all.”
“Keeping up with the Jones'” becomes an endless, exhaustive story like a hamster in a wheel, running faster and faster. And for what?
Have you noticed that the more stuff you have, the more stuff owns you, your time, and your energy? One can become a prisoner of stuff, which can weigh one down.
The secret? Focus less on acquiring stuff and more on BEING.
Be fully present in your conversations, commune with nature, be a more compassionate and loving human BEING.
It’s your BE-ING-NESS which attracts—like a magnet—all wealth, health, happiness, and love. You won’t need to run like a hamster to get it. It will be drawn to you.
Just BE and you, too, will see!
Hello! I’d like to tell you a little bit about myself and my inspiration for starting this blog. I grew up in a foster home in Vancouver, Canada and was born to a schizophrenic mother and a father I’ve never known. During my teenage years and early twenties, I often felt lonely and I longed for deep family connection. My unhappiness and loneliness periodically manifested in emotional eating as I attempted to fill my inner void with comforting foods.
At 23 years of age, I met a handsome, young man while backpacking in Europe. Later that year, I moved to Los Angeles, married him and became a U.S. citizen. Shortly after we married, there were inquiries about grandchildren from my in-laws, but I wasn’t ready for that. I had a hole inside of me and I needed to figure out what was missing.
After a life-changing (psilocybin-induced) mystical experience in Joshua Tree, California, I followed my heart and left my husband. I read numerous spiritual and self-help books, I cried a lot as it felt like I had undergone a death, and I was a patient of network chiropractic work and acupuncture to help facilitate my own healing process.
Over the past twenty years, my focus has been on my healing and spiritual growth, as I built a life. In 2003, I moved to Las Vegas, where I bought and furnished my own brand new house, and I worked my way up to six figure corporate jobs in the hospitality industry.
I had accolades, income, and status, but a few years ago I experienced adrenal fatigue and burnout, coupled with a longing to get into work that is more spiritually gratifying. Simultaneously, I felt a longing to connect with a spiritual tribe. Once again my heart (and body) was speaking to me and it was time to make some changes.
I returned to school full-time and reduced work to part-time. In July 2017, I graduated Cum Laude from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas with a BA in psychology. Summer 2017, I started writing a monthly health and wellness blog for the National United States Bartender’s Guild (www.usbg.org). In the Fall of 2017, I begin graduate school as my goal is to become a Doctor of Oriental Medicine (OMD) and open my own health and wellness practice. Here I am, bravely choosing to reinvent my life in my late forties.
I know that everything happens for a reason and that the universe provides experiences and opportunities to help facilitate our growth. However, it’s up to each of us whether or not we choose to listen and act upon our inner stirrings and life’s outer promptings. It is also up to each of us whether we blame the world for our adversities and circumstances, or we become more resilient and strengthened by them.
I’ve noticed my life become more harmonious (with less drama), as I’ve consistently chosen to nurture my soul’s higher purpose. Today, I feel an inner peace and connection as I consciously live from this awareness. Whether you call it God, Source, Brahman or Great Spirit, there is a power that I’m tapping into and it feels wonderful!
I feel inspired to share what I’ve learned through this blog and hopefully, others who read it will learn something and perhaps find some inspiration, solace, and even some healing for themselves. That is my hope, anyway. After all, life is an experiential journey and a process which guides us into deeper levels of BEING, awareness, and love.

Life can get downright challenging. Sometimes life can get so tough that we wonder how we will manage to make it through the day. Next time this happens to you ask yourself, “What can I do to turn this horrible experience into something more tolerable?”
Should you ask for help? Do you need to forgive someone or let go of something? Perhaps you could start a purposeful new project to get your mind off of the pain? Being proactive by transforming a negative experience into a more positive, loving solution, helps lighten and heal your spirit and the spirits of those around you. Actively choose to turn your living nightmare, into a little piece of heaven on earth.
